Basic List of Moving Supplies

For most of us, moving is no fun, however there are things in your control that will help ensure your moving experience is as easy and pain free as possible. The first thing you should do is prepare yourself for the move. Don’t wait to the day before moving to make sure you have all the supplies you need. In fact, start making list and buying supplies BEFORE you put your home up for sale.

Having all the supplies you need at your home ready to go is essential to making your move easy. Buy what moving supplies do you need? I’m talking about packing supplies, moving boxes, tape, etc.

Having the proper packing supplies on hand will save you time, energy, and stress. Here is a list of packing supplies that you should have before you even think about starting to pack anything:

Moving Boxes. This is an obvious one, but you’d be surprised at how many people get it wrong. It’s important that you know the proper size and number of boxes that you will need. Moving boxes are available from many places. Some Fort Worth businesses will give you empty boxes if you ask. Don’t expect to find many though as the good ones are snatched up fast. The ‘Free’ section on Craigslist is also a good place to get free boxes. But don’t slack off. There is a cottage industry of people who constantly monitor this section for free moving boxes. They then turn around and sell them for a profit. Also, there are a wide variety of boxes for sale at packing/shipping services, home improvement and department stores, post offices, etc. Be sure to get different sized boxes. Large ones for light, bulky objects and small ones for heavier items like books. And don’t be afraid to get too many. Many movers and storage places will buy back any unused boxes, sometimes at the price you paid for them.

Tape. Buy some good-quality packing tape. Not the cheap convenience store kind either. Unless you’re just moving a room or two, chances you’ll need several rolls. I prefer the type with the nylon string in it for the heavy boxes. This tape must be cut with scissors. It’s a good idea to purchase packing tape that comes with a built-in dispenser. These tape dispensers make taping up your boxes easier and faster.

Packing Material. Save old newspapers for a few weeks before your move. Newspapers make good packing material for most household items. The more delicate and valuable items in your home will require more packing. Bubble wrap, foam peanuts, and blankets provide excellent protection for items you don’t want damaged.

Labels. These are optional, but if you aren’t able to write directly onto your containers you’ll want to buy or make some labels. Clearly labeled boxes make organization and unpacking easier.

Utility Blade. Be sure you have a good knife to cut the tape on the boxes once you arrive at your new home. Be careful though! You don’t want to cut into your valuables. Also, watch where your cutting. Nothing ruins the first night in your new diggs than a sliced hand or arm and having to spend the night in the emergency room!

A little planning goes a long way when you’re preparing to move. Make sure you are ready to pack your belongings before you begin the job of packing up your home and moving.
